Zambia

Zambia is one of the finest, if not the best, dangerous game hunting grounds in Africa.  There are 18 National Parks covering over 14 million acres, and hunting concessions totaling in excess of 34 million acres.  A third of the entire country is set aside to wildlife, which means it is an African safari paradise.

What makes Zambia so distinct from other African hunting destinations is the zoning of land areas around the national parks as game management areas.  These blocks represent protective buffer zones to the national parks putting a safe corridor between the parks and community areas.  The free movement of animals between the parks and the game management areas ensure a reliable supply of superior trophy animals.  It is here that Zambia hosts foreign hunters from all over the world who seek to stalk their trophies and experience the adventures of a great hunt.  Zambia’s major river valleys, her Kalahari bushveld to the southwest, plateau woodlands throughout the interior, as well as her swamps and extensive floodplain savannahs provide one of the most exceptional and exciting selections of trophy animals to be found in a single African nation, totally some 35 different species.

Do not try to book a safari in Zambia on your own.  You need to book a safari through Adventures Unlimited with a reputable professional hunter who is a legitimate leaseholder, or a professional hunter that hunts for one of the leaseholders.  There are several fly-by-night operators, especially from South Africa, that will tell you they can book you a Zambian safari and in truth cannot deliver.  Be warned.  Safaris in this Garden of Eden are going for top prices right now, but it is money well spent.

We work with several of the best hunting operations in Zambia in the Luangwa Valley, the Kafue area, and the Zambezi Valley and other remote concessions for specialized game.  We work with Nyampala Safaris, Muchinga Adventures Ltd, , Luawata Conservation, Hunters and Guides Ltd, Vidale Zafaris and Wildcat Safaris.

With our strong connections in Zambia we are able to offer the most hunting opportunities in prime concessions, and the largest quotas of lion, leopard and Cape buffalo in this country.

Safari Areas
Hunting concessions in Zambia are referred to as GMA’s or Game Management Areas. They are among the finest safari hunting grounds in all of Africa, and are closely controlled by both the outfitters and the Zambian Wildlife Authority. There are three primary hunting regions in Zambia which are listed in detail below.

The eastern part of the country is home to the famous Luangwa Valley. It is vast catchment that funnels down a 200 mile long valley with a widely meandering Luangwa River flowing down the middle. The Luangwa is famous for is big lion, big leopard, huge herds of buffalo, and it variety of plains game. The Lusemfwa River Valley is a smaller version of the Luangwa that runs through the Luano game management area, and to the east lies the Zambezi Valley where hunting is also possible near the confluence of the Luangwa and Zambezi Rivers.

In south-central Zambia there is a large national park, almost the size of Connecticut, called the Kafue National Park. Surrounding it are eight game management areas, which together with the national park represent the largest single wildlife reserve in Africa. Interspersed with woodlands, thickets, savannahs and moist grassy areas called dambos; this area of Zambia provides diverse selections of big game trophies that guarantee thrilling and challenging safari conditions. These hunting blocks produce excellent lion, leopard, buffalo, sable and many other species.

Zambia’s wetland areas provide unrivaled hunting opportunities for the Black Lechwe, Red Lechwe and Sitatunga. Bangweulu Swamp is home to the black lechwe with number reaching over 30,000 and offering excellent trophy quality. The Bangweulu floodplains also provide hunters an opportunity to hunt some of the biggest Cape buffalo in Africa.

Much less known to the international hunting fraternity is the West Zambezi, a vast region of floodplains, Kalahari sandveld, and patches of woodland. Back in the mid to late 70’s and early 80’s this region produced the most magnificent trophy lion in Africa- all huge bodied with jet black manes, the true lion trophies of the golden age. It has not been well hunted in recent years due to the spill-over effect of the armed conflict in Angola which contribute to massive outbreaks of poaching. With the cessation of hostilities in Angola and determined law enforcement by some anti-poaching game scouts, hunters will hopefully be able to look forward to hunting this region in the not too distant future as the game populations are starting to recover.

There are many differences with the areas above. Each has its own special qualities, game conditions and game availability. We will custom tailor a safari to suit your exact needs based on the game you seek, your budget and your physical condition.

Safari Camps
The Zambian Wildlife Authority maintains strict control over safari camp structures in the Game Management Areas. Accordingly, safari camps are usually built out of local materials consisting of thatch and stone (non-permanent), or classic canvas tents. The camp builders over the years have become master craftsmen turning nature’s bounty into beautiful hunting accommodations.

Hunting Methods
The safari hunting in Zambia is principally oriented on tracking and stalking of the game. Vehicles are used to cover the huge reserves, but once game or game sign is seen, hunts progress on foot.

Outfitters, Hunting Details, Game Available and Trophy Fees We work with several of the best hunting operations in Zambia in the Luangwa Valley, the Kafue area, and the Zambezi Valley and other remote concessions for specialized game.  We work with Nyampala Safaris, Muchinga Adventures Ltd, Luawata Conservation, Hunters and Guides Ltd, Vidale Zafaris and Wildcat Safaris. Nyampala Safaris Zambia is one of the finest, if not the best, dangerous game hunting grounds in Africa.  There are 18 National Parks covering over 14 million acres, and hunting concessions totaling in excess of 34 million acres.  A third of the entire country is set aside to wildlife, which means it is an African safari paradise. The majority of our Zambian safaris take place on the concessions adjacent to the North and South Luangwa National Parks.  The Luangwa Valley has long been one of the best areas in Africa if you are looking for truly huge lion, leopard, buffalo and other plains game.  We also conduct safaris on a few of the prime concessions around the Kafue National Park that offer tremendous dangerous game as well as sable, roan and other plains game.  Everyone traveling to Zambia should plan on adding a few extra days for species like Kafue & Black Lechwe, Sitatunga, Tsessebe and Oribi. Mukungule is a brand new concession that borders the western side of the North Luangwa National Park.  This is Zambia’s latest declared game reserve, and we predict it will produce some truly once in a lifetime trophies for our clients over the next 3 to 5 seasons.  This area has it all including lion, leopard, buffalo, sable, eland, roan and plains game.  Intensive management and anti-poaching patrols instituted by some of the world’s largest conservation groups have had an unbelievable impact in this area.  We fully expect our clients to shoot some of the biggest Lion and Cape buffalo the likes of which Zambia has not seen in over 30 years.  Only a few lucky hunters will have the opportunity to hunt this concession due to our strict conservation efforts. Upper Lupande is located in the Luangwa Valley and is reached via commercial air to Mfuwe from Lusaka, then about a one hour drive to camp.  This concession has a long history of very good hunting, especially for lion, leopard, buffalo, eland, roan and plains game. The Rufunsa is a fairly rugged area where some of the largest buffalo are found in all of Zambia, but hunters must be physically fit.  The Rufunsa borders Mozambique to the east of Lusaka and the camp is set alongside the river; a very pretty location.  Rufunsa would be the destination for a hunter who wants a big buffalo and a very good leopard (100% success rate). Bangweulu Swamps is an 850,000 acre hunting area where animals like Black Lechwe, Tsessebe, Sitatunga, Oribi and Reedbuck are found in very good numbers.  The area usually requires a charter flight, but if you are hunting Mukungule it is only a 3 hour drive.  This is a famous hunting area, and the only place where you can hunt Black Lechwe in the wild.  In 2006 the first Buffalo quotas were issued and results were very impressive.  We look to take 3 or 4 magnificent specimens in the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

Hunters and Guides- Gavin Hume Zambia is a vast country of more than 290,000 square miles (751,000 km²), half of which is pristine wilderness inhabited by some of the most diverse wildlife in Africa.  What makes Zambia so distinct from other African hunting destinations is the zoning of land areas around the national parks as Game Management Areas (GMA).  The free movement of animals between the parks and the game management areas ensure a reliable supply of superior trophies.  Altogether, national parks and GMA’s represent about 33 per cent of Zambia's total land area, and nearly two-thirds of this is GMA, totaling over 63,320 sq miles (164,000 km²).  The diversity of terrain includes river valleys, Kalahari Bushveld to the southwest, plateau woodlands throughout the interior, as well as swamps and extensive flood plain savannahs thereby providing one of the most exceptional and exciting selection of trophy animals, (35 species), to be found in a single African country. The safari-hunting season extends throughout the dry season. These being the cool, dry months of May through July to the dry, hot months of October and into November.  By late November, when the first rains fall, safari camps close; roads turn to mud and become impassable, streams start to flow again and cut off entry into many of the hunting areas.  Dutiful wildlife scouts remain behind to police the area for next year's hunting season.  Rains continue into April and by late May safari camps are reopened. This area is 2,094 km² in extent.  Kasonso’s eastern boundary borders onto the Kafue National Park allowing the game to migrate unhindered.  Owing to the varied habitats of Kasonso, a diverse specie list can be offered.  It is the only area in Zambia where Red Lechwe, Yellow Backed Duiker and Blue Duiker occur simultaneously.  Sitatunga are hunted in the Busanga swamp situated in our area, while the plains are host to healthy populations of plains game which are hunted by the Big Cats. Hunters & Guides camps are comfortably made from natural materials.  Each sleeping unit has en-suite bathroom facilities. The centrally located dining room allows one to relax while listening to the days hunting chatter around the open campfire. Safari Rates

Luawata Conservation with Athol Frylink Luawata Conservation is a privately funded hunting company that operates in the Luangwa Valley of Zambia.  They provide an exclusive service to clients who wish to experience the traditional safari and limit their season to only four 21 day safaris per season, and a couple of shorter Cape Buffalo Plains Game Safaris.  Nevertheless, the company purchases the full quota at the beginning of each season and willingly carries the cost of those animals not hunted.  In addition, a large portion of the revenue generated by the safari operation is returned to the indigenous population, thus insuring maximum benefit to the local community. Luawata Conservation operates in the Luawata Game Management Area, located in the corridor between the North and South Luangwa National parks in the east of Zambia.  The Luangwa Valley is known as one of the great game areas of Africa and Luawata lies in the very heart of that prime hunting country. Luawata Camp nestles under huge shade trees on the banks of the Luangwa River, and offers comfortable accommodation n thatched bungalows with en-suite bathrooms, hot and cold showers, and flush toilets.  The camp uses solar power for lighting, water is pumped from a well, and all drinking water is boiled and filtered.  Ice is plentiful and the camp cuisine is of a high standard with a fine selection of wines and other drinks. Safari Rates: Due to the fact that only a portion of the hunting quota is utilized every year, and the demand for classic safaris in Luawata is so high the safaris are usually sold a minimum 18 months to two years in advance.  Prices are subject to change every year.  Due to these circumstances only a rough estimate for the safari rates is provided below.  Please contact us for detailed quotes.
