South Africa

South Africa is an excellent choice for a starter safari or for the veteran finishing his Big 5 with a Rhino and is the most popular safari hunting destination in Africa.  With its ease of travel, well-developed infrastructure, luxury safari camps and wide variety of hunting options it is an ideal destination for everyone, including the family.  In addition to the variety of plains game species available to hunt, there are also prime options for Dangerous Game under fair chase conditions.  South Africa has the largest variety of game species in the entire world.

It is easy to see why South Africa hosts more international hunters than anywhere else in the world.  The country is composed of nine different provinces, each having its own unique features and habitats.  When planning a hunt to South Africa it is critical you use the services of Adventure Unlimited to help you find the best safari that will suit your exact requests.  We will custom tailor a safari for you that can combine hunts in different regions, help you with side tours like photographic trips into the Kruger National Park or a stay in Cape Town, or even plan a romantic trip on one of the nostalgic trains that traverse the South African countryside.

We strictly abide by fair chase and free-ranging standards.  Our Dangerous Game hunting safaris are on concessions, reserves and even within the boundaries of some of the national parks.  All hunting is conducted under ethical guidelines provided by numerous worldwide hunting organizations and the Professional Hunters Association of South Africa.

Hunting Season
Year round hunting is permitted in South Africa.

Hunting Areas
There are nine different provinces in South Africa- Western Cape, Eastern Cape, North Cape, Free Stat, KwaZulu Natal, Northwest Province, Gauteng, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga.  Each province offers various hunting opportunities for different species.  The game hunting reserves will range in size from just a few thousand acres up to 120,000 acres.  Most of our clients are accommodated on a select few of the prime game reserves in South Africa which are over 70,000 acres.  95% of the hunters going to South Africa end up hunting on small preserves that offer limited trophies and hunting areas- to hunt several species usually requires hunters with these types of operations to spend time traveling in the car from one hunting ranch to the next and valuable time is lost, not to mention the part of the nostalgia of hunting in Africa.  Our clients on the other hand hunt the largest private reserves in South Africa, where all the species occur on the same property where your safari camp is located.  When you wake up in the morning on one of our hunting safaris you begin hunting immediately as you pull out of camp.

Safari Camps
South Africa boasts the largest variety of safari camps available in Africa.  You can find traditional tent-style safari camps as well as the full blown super luxury lodges complete with

Hunting Methods
The safari hunting in South Africa principally oriented on tracking and stalking of the game.  Vehicles are used to cover the huge reserves, but once game or game sign is seen, hunts progress on foot.

History and Description:
After the British seized the Cape of Good Hope area in 1806, many of the Dutch settlers (the Boers) trekked north to found their own republics. The discovery of diamonds (1867) and gold (1886) spurred wealth and immigration and intensified the subjugation of the native inhabitants. The Boers resisted British encroachments but were defeated in the Boer War (1899-1902). The resulting Union of South Africa operated under a policy of apartheid – the separate development of the races. The 1990s brought an end to apartheid politically and ushered in black majority rule.

We have three primary safari outfitters we work with in South Africa- Hunters Moon Safaris and Game Reserve, Chapungu Safaris and Kalahari Oryx Game Reserve, and African Classic Safaris. Hunters Moon Safaris and Game Reserve We have had the privilege to go on safari in most of Africa’s best hunting reserves.  Hunters Moon is the Mecca, the Garden of Eden, the Shangri La, or whichever term you would like to use, of the plains game hunting world.  Herds of trophy quality animals roam the huge reserve in numbers like they did 100 years ago. Hunters Moon is an extensive and spectacular 67 000 acre hunting reserve that offers the discerning and serious hunter an unrivalled safari adventure in ideal and authentic conditions.  The reserve is owned and managed by the McAdam family, and it is with their dedication, vision and rare understanding of the land and its finely balanced ecosystem, that has brought this unique place to its full potential. Hunters Moon is located in the centre of the country in the Karoo region of South Africa, and has its own private airstrip with transfers to the ranch. The preserve is located in a summer rainfall area where the winters are dry with mild day time temperatures and chilly evenings. The climate is one of the healthiest in the country and ideal for hunting, with little chance of wet weather during hunting season. The preserve straddles 25 kilometers of the Seacow River and is characterized by vast Serengeti-like plains interspersed with rocky outcrops and tree-lined drainage systems providing good hunting cover. Hunting parties are accompanied by professional hunters, trackers and skinners. Hunting vehicles are used to reach your destination from where all tracking and stalking is done on foot in accordance with worldwide hunting ethics. The entire 67 000 acre ranch has no internal fences and guarantees fair chase hunting. Accommodation at Hunters Moon consists of 4 luxurious en-suite bedrooms in two separate cottages each with their own private lounge and kitchenette.  All have scenic views of the endless Karoo landscape and are well equipped with all the modern comforts including electricity, under-floor heating, separate shower and bath, and private patios.  Bar facilities, tea and coffee are available in the cottages.  In the manor house, there is a comfortable main lounge and dining room with large fireplaces for the chilly winter evenings. The outdoor reed boma with large central fireplace and fully stocked sleeper-wood bar, is perfect for an evening barbeque under the clear African sky.   The emphasis at Hunters Moon is on exclusivity with a personal touch. The topography and vegetation are typically mountainous Grassland. The area lies at an altitude of ± 6 000 feet above sea level with peaks of up to 7 000 feet. Areas Freestate, Bloemfontein/ Brandfort: (1 hour from Bloemfontein) The Freestate, with its blend of acacia, long grass and agricultural land allows for excellent game bird and waterfowl shooting. With over 90 000 acres of concessions land, we provide our clients with a true wing shooting paradise. The types of bird species prevalent in this area: Francolin, Guinea Fowl, Doves, Pigeons, Quail, Geese, Ducks, Greywing. Hunting With it's wide variety of game birds we use different techniques such as driven hunts and placing clients in the "pass" position. Guinea Fowl are driven from the fields to the rough where they are walked up, and the excitement of a bird picking up at any time keeps the hunter focused on his surroundings and that perfect shot. The open areas and grasslands provide sufficient cover for francolin who have scared many a hunter in it's late flight and keep your dogs on the point, signaling the hunter to ready himself for a number of species which could be present in the grass. The mountainous slopes of the southeastern Freestate allowing for excellent Greywing shooting… The Freestate is one of the largest producing agricultural areas within South Africa, i.e. corn, maize, sorghum and sunflower, which in turns explains the amount of bird species found. February - April and definitely Rock Pigeon season with clients able to shoot a 1000 - 2000 shells a day! The waterfowl season opens 1 June - 31 August and depending on rainfall, one is able to reach bag-limit daily.  Hunting here allows for the use of blinds and decoys, thus attracting waterfowl species to the area allowing for an enjoyable shoot. Travel Options and Itinerary
  • There are three daily flights on SAA from JHB to Bloemfontein airport, followed by a 40 minutes drive to the lodge.
  • Road transfer from JHB to the lodge, 4.5 hour drive, costs as per price list.
  • Daily travel to all concession areas included in daily rates.
  • Client's daily itinerary depends on what species are going to be hunted that day and the distance to be covered by road to do so.  However a typical days hunt would be as follows:
    • Rock Pigeons and doves Clients are woken up and meet in the lounge for tea and coffee before heading to the vehicles. The birds fly from their roost, either in nearby mountainous areas or Bloemfontein, to the Sunflower fields and I first identify their flight path before placing my clients out in the "pass" position for the morning flight, replicating this in the afternoon.
    • Waterfowl and game birds Similar morning activity however depending on the distance generally an earlier wake up. We scout every dam before hunting there to ensure the amount of birds and flight path to or back from nearby feed fields. Thus depending on the flight we will build blinds and place decoys to attract the birds as best as possible. The waterfowl shoot will either be a morning or afternoon shoot thus we generally hunt game birds within the same area as the geese and ducks stop flying around 8h30/9h00. Guineafowl and Francolin are shot either over dogs or driven through maize and sunflower towards the clients.
