Botswana

Roughly the size of Texas, but with only 1.7 million people, Botswana is located in the heart of southern Africa. Its three primary geographic regions include the arid Kalahari Desert, the land-locked Okavango Delta with its amazing wildlife species, and the bush rich Chobe region famous for its big trophy elephant, cape buffalo, leopard, lion and antelope.

Following Bushmen trackers as they use skills passed down through generations on the trial of big tom leopard, or hunting monster Cape Buffalo and trophy Elephant in Botswana’s thick bush, we guarantee it will be a thrill that will last a lifetime. Having dedicated more land to national parks and preserves than any other African nation, this is truly a hunter’s paradise. From big game hunting, to wing shooting to fishing, or even just a photographic safari with your family, Botswana is an ideal destination for those seeking the real wild Africa in its most pristine beauty.

Hunting Season
The Botswana hunting season usually starts in April and ends the second or third week of September.

Safari Areas
We hunt several of the top concessions in Botswana. In the Okavango Delta our areas are renowned for large herds of elephants and buffalo and the quality of the trophies coming out of this area continue to get better and better. The area also has an abundance of plains game. Leopard are hunted with bait and success is extremely high.

Our other hunting concessions are in the north east of the country in the Chobe region. Situated between the Chobe National Park and the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe this is a direct and natural corridor between the two parks, and a natural highway for the elephants. You could not pick a more strategic elephant-hunting destination anywhere in the world. Our safari outfitters’ concessions in this region are home to large numbers of elephant. The Chobe has produced consistently high average tusk weights, among the highest in all of Botswana. Other species common to the area include buffalo, eland and leopard.

Safari Camps
The camps in Botswana are usually semi-permanent tent-style accommodations built on raised decks, with en suite bathrooms.

Hunting Methods and Conditions
A number of different methods are used when hunting in Botswana. Due to the sheer size of the huge hunting blocks it is necessary to use a vehicle to access and cover the remote areas of the concessions. Once game or spoor is seen, hunters and their professional hunter proceed on foot in the classic tracking and stalking manner.

History and Description:
Formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana adopted its new name upon independence in 1966. Four decades of uninterrupted civilian leadership, progressive social policies, and significant capital investment have created one of the most dynamic economies in Africa. Mineral extraction, principally diamond mining, dominates economic activity, though tourism is a growing sector due to the country’s conservation practices and extensive nature preserves. Botswana has one of the world’s highest known rates of HIV/AIDS infection, but also one of Africa’s most progressive and comprehensive programs for dealing with the disease.

Hakuna Matata with Thys DeVries The DeVries family was the first big game outfitter that Adventure Unlimited represented when we opened our doors. Over the last 20 years they have produced incredible safaris for their clients at very reasonable prices. The family principals which included father Buck DeVries and sons Pen and Thys DeVries have been pioneering forces in the African hunting industry. The DeVries family lost their beautiful Lions Den Safaris homestead in Zimbabwe when the government began reclaiming the private land in Zimbabwe, but the family extended its operations into big game concessions throughout Zimbabwe, and for the last 5 years have taken their hunters to the prime concessions in Botswana. Thys DeVries and his professional hunters are known for producing big ivory, formerly in the Tscholotsho South block of Zimbabwe where they took dozens of bulls with ivory in the 70 to 92 pound range. Thys and his professional hunters won just about every award for elephant that the Zimbabwe professional hunters association gives out. Now their tradition continues in some of the finest hunting blocks of Botswana where they have been hunting for the last 5 years. One of the prime concessions is situated between the famous Chobe National Park and the equally famous Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. This is a direct and natural corridor between the two parks, and a natural highway for the elephants. You could not pick a more strategic elephant hunting destination anywhere in the world. The region is home to large numbers of elephant and has been managed extensively to give clients the best opportunity in Africa for taking a truly magnificent trophy tusker.
